I can officially say that both my parents have now been involved in this year's Boston marathon training. Since they were here visiting this past weekend, I was able to run with my dad on two occasions, both on east campus and the ATT. I always treasure these moments, they evoke so many childhood memories and emotions for me. My dad, my hero, my inspiration, running side by side once again. Huffing and puffing, gasping, feet shuffling while I chat away, it's music to my ears.
I didn't get my long run in on Monday due to many scheduling conflicts, so I set out do it on Tuesday. My dear mother, now 63, proudly volunteered to ride her bike with me! I mean my bike, not hers, which means she had to ride my $69 bike I bought from Toys R' Us 10 yrs ago! It meant so much to her to be a part of this training and since she's physically unable to run, this was a great way for her to participate. 18 miles of bliss on the ATT with my mom on the bike carrying my water and GU's. We had a fabulous time, chatting the time away, it was perfect. I had her keep one tire in front of me to help me push the pace and a few times she sped away from me so I'd push even harder.
The run: perfect weather, kept an 8:20 pace for 18 miles finishing in 2:30:40, last two miles were done in 8:06 & 7:50. Accel Gel at mile 5, Honey Stinger at mile 12. At 2:11 by mile 15.5. Felt relaxed in first 5 miles and strongest through miles 15-18. I was looking forward to this run and it proved to be a fantastic experience, i could have kept running. I wish all long runs felt this way.
Favorite quote I read this week "...if you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon." Emil Zatopek.
Panic attack: Boston in just 67 days!!!!!! Must order my pace tattoos this week!
